Traveling Footwork Dances of the Hispanic World

Students will watch, listen and participate in an interactive, bi-lingual assembly of music and footwork dances from Spain and Latin America.

The assembly will showcase footwork dances and rhythms from  the countries of Spain, Mexico and Venezuela; the presentation includes an interactive portion involving dancing, singing, classical guitar demo and body percussion. The narrated assembly will be performed by a costumed classical Spanish dancer, a classical singer and a classical guitarist.

What does Zapateo mean?


Zapateado is a style of dance characterized by intricate, percussive footwork. The name comes from the Spanish word zapato which means shoe. Zapatear is to strike with a shoe. 

Curriculum Goals:

  • Students will learn about shoe dances, known as “zapateado”, and how this form of dancing can be found throughout the Spanish speaking world.

  • Students will be introduced to the idea of how music, dance and culture can “travel” and influence culture in various ways.

  • Students will be introduced to the ideas of feet and body as “percussion instruments”.

  • The assembly will promote the idea of how dance and songs tell stories.
