Traveling Footwork Dances of the Hispanic World
Students will watch, listen and participate in an interactive, bi-lingual assembly of music and footwork dances from Spain and Latin America.
The assembly will showcase footwork dances and rhythms from the countries of Spain, Mexico and Venezuela; the presentation includes an interactive portion involving dancing, singing, classical guitar demo and body percussion. The narrated assembly will be performed by a costumed classical Spanish dancer, a classical singer and a classical guitarist.
What does Zapateo mean?
Zapateado is a style of dance characterized by intricate, percussive footwork. The name comes from the Spanish word zapato which means shoe. Zapatear is to strike with a shoe.
Curriculum Goals:

Students will learn about shoe dances, known as “zapateado”, and how this form of dancing can be found throughout the Spanish speaking world.

Students will be introduced to the idea of how music, dance and culture can “travel” and influence culture in various ways.

Students will be introduced to the ideas of feet and body as “percussion instruments”.

The assembly will promote the idea of how dance and songs tell stories.
